Associated Artists of Winston-Salem
Opening Reception
National Juried Exhibition of art exploring the diversity of cultures in our global village.
Free Opening Reception. Show is on view through November 20.
Juror's Statement:
"The Cultural Crossroads exhibition presents a diverse exciting selection of primarily recent works in painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, video stills, ceramics, mixed media collage, fibre and water color. Artists were encouraged to consider many aspects of the theme -from their own traditional historical and cultural perspectives.
Cultural Crossroads entries evoke the contradictions, complexities and multiple perspectives that characterize the contemporary life and it's presentation in art. The works are vibrant, bold and thought provoking. The phrase "Cultural Crossroads" suggests a meeting point| transition|border|exchange|tension and identity. Many live and understand this due to our reenactments of personal memory and collective. Artists in this exhibition reflect this fascinating hybrid and other competing ideas about cultural crossroads and identity in a variety of the works submitted expressing curved lines of past and present.
There are 80 works of art showing a variety of themes treated by the artists that share insights into traditions and contemporary art scenes in the region. I too stand at a cultural crossroads having curated Caribbean Crossroads Exhibitions for the past thirteen years. This intimacy with selecting the works was a sincere pleasure."

REAP 1st place at Clash of the Artists 2009 SELL OUT CROWD FOR "CLASH OF THE ARTISTS 2009"
The CLASH OF THE ARTISTS bash, held Saturday March 14th, was a real Metro turnout with artists, photographers, musicians, DJs and fashion designers intermingled with art lovers, fashionistas and loyal fans of this spectacular annual event, now in its third year.
The culmination of the international competition was staged and presented by Art For Progress (www.artforprogress.org). The energy at the fundraising event was a striking testimonial to the organization's charitable spirit of providing arts education, and to their passion for unearthing artistic talent.
Held at 320 Studios, the finals event featured an ongoing series of film, fashion, art, and performances that rocked the house. The evening began with an opening reception for the visual arts finalists, followed by the film competition. Film makers from the US and Japan screened their shorts to a sell-out group of over 250 people.
By 10pm the air began to buzz with the excitement of the eclectic crowd, the garden terrace, delectable food from Some Things Fishy Catering, and an open bar from Frederick Wildman and Sons as the live musical performances filled the night air.
Following the live music, the much anticipated fashion show featured the creative collections of Iliana Quander of New York, and Laura Haywood of Leeds, UK. DJ's Dennis Sebayan and Rob Paterson then closed out the night, while the crowd danced the night away. This successful event sets the stage for a future plan that Art For Progress will soon be bringing to life, Medium, an innovative concept store/art/performance space slated to open this Spring in Manhattan.
