The TEMPTATION
SERIES interprets the tempting of Adam and Eve.
Unexpectedly, the serpent consumes both Adam
and Eve in every panel. Michelangelo’s
influence is present, in juxtaposition with
elements found in Benin masks. Awkwardly foreshortened
poses, offset angles and distorted figures move
the viewer through the picture. The animalistic
figures presuppose a new breed of humans. Along
with visual texture, the mediums used played
an active role in the creation of movement and
tension. The absolute whiteness of the paper
allows for dramatic gradations of value. The
interplay between these elements and the subject
of the compositions catches the viewer’s
attention, and redirects the eye to the image.
The totality of the series creates a rhythm
and movement, which defines temptation, reluctantly
drawing the viewer into a world both sublime
and threatening.
